I know this successful businessman in Northeast Ohio, a likable guy who always has a smile and a story and a kind word for everybody. He won't do business with people from Medina. Medina people, he says, are shifty and shady; they'll go back on their word and cheat you when they can get a better deal doing it the honest way. Medina is a nest of vipers. That's the town the mighty FISTULA calls home. And while they might look and sound uglier than shit, they're the good guys.
At the heart of Fistula are guitarist/main man COREY BING (who sings, plays guitar, and/or drums on some releases, depending on who’s flaking out at the moment) and bassist BAHB BRANCA, the toxic twins of sludge metal, blood brothers who have been to hell and back together. They live a little cave called The Fistula House. And, yeah, being the good guys in a world of shit, they have problems. We won’t name names, but a quick look at these guys’ lives over the last year, and it’s like the kind of shit you’d hear at a 12-step meeting. Divorce. Dependency. Depression. Destruction. Shit just got worse.
Sure, metal magazine of record DECIBEL rated their last major release, 2010’s GOAT e.p., an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. But at home, it got them nothing but grief. The assholes at some Cleveland TV station gave them a hard time about the disc, which was a loose concept piece based on Anthony Sowell, a local serial killer who’s been in the news. The news stooges were offended that the limited edition of GOAT came with a bag of dirt from the killer’s East Cleveland yard, and THEN the journalists further contacted the victims’ families to see how they felt about Fistula. One blamed the band and said they shouldn’t be making money on the situation. Making money? Indie metal bands aren’t exactly raking it in.
Anyway, some people hammered away at Fistula like they were trying to make ‘em quit. But they didn’t. The band is back. Holy shit, are they back. In any given year, the put out more records than they play shows — they’re not in the game to be seen on the scene, join the local cool-guy club, and get some underage pussy. Instead of hanging out in clubs, they get together in grungy houses and barns and basements and make records. And Fistula have a few coming up. Here’s a rundown of their new & upcoming shits:
Bing and Bahb play with JESSE KLING (also of Pennsylvania burnouts SOLLUBI) and JEREMY WILSON (ex-BRU-HA-HA and RUE) on three upcoming releases: The new NORTHERN AGGRESSION album is a slow, doomy, ugly mix of crusty grind, with some thrash, punk and metal thrown in to keep it interesting. The song “Dr. Doom” is about the imminent collapse of society, and “Monte” is, according to Bing, “is a song about the coolest kid in the world who gets shit on by dumb fucks, and ends up killing everyone who wronged him.”
The NORTHERN AGGRESSION lineup also has another quick little kidney punch due soon called the LUBRIKATOR e.p., and it’ll rock a little more. Tunes like “Devils Got Me Double Dippin’” will remind you of old Dwarves… if you really know old Dwarves, and you’re not one of those poseur pussies who jut pretends to be down.
That FISTULA lineup also have a song on a new split with COFFINWORM, which is coming soon from label HELL COMES HOME. Bing, the stubborn prick, refuses to make two albums that sound the same. But this one song is an oversized, unholy ball of everything the band does well: gnarly grooves, sick guitar tone, vocals that sound like someone’s being disemboweled (and loving it).
Also in the hopper, due to be released on Boston’s PATAC RECORDS, is the LOSER e.p. Says Bing, “It’s very dark and sad, twisted humor, dense, heavy, tuned LOW. It sounds like THE HOUNDS: old metal, VENOM style with GBH undertones. It sounds like Death playing hopscotch with the apocalypse while finger-bangin’ Autopsy.”
