Erin Michael Rioux (ree-yoo) makes colorful music with a modern approach. As Rioux, he puts on a one-man show of electronic psychedelia accompanied by the visuals of video artist Cabrido.
The organic sound of Rioux began in suburban Michigan, where a four-track tape recorder surfaced in Erin's basement. A fascination with the device inclined Erin to start writing and recording at age 12. To layer his guitar experiments Erin began collecting and teaching himself a variety of instruments including drums, organ, trumpet, french horn, and kalimba. At 16 he won a trip to Germany and grew interested in electronic music. Erin refined his sonics through computer production while never leaving his real instruments behind.
Rioux's live show reflects this digital/analog collage. Erin loops guitar, drum pads, and trumpet through his laptop as he sings. Cabrido's washes of original and found footage show us the music as he sees it, edited to the beat. While living in Brooklyn over summer 2010, Rioux released three EPs and four singles in addition to completing his first full-length album, Everything You Need Is Right Here. "I became really interested in transcendence while making the record, so there's a narrative of searching for higher consciousness." The record will be pressed to vinyl and released online as an audiovisual album January 17th, 2011. In February Rioux will embark on his first European tour in support of an adventurous and refreshingly universal debut.
