Meytal Cohen (Hebrew: מיטל כהן) (born August 9, 1983 or 1984 in Ramat Gan, Israel) is an Israeli drummer who lives in Los Angeles, California. In addition to playing in casual ensembles and working as a studio session musician, she tours with famous performers.
She was Israeli-born in Ramat Gan, the seventh (yongest) child of a large family: she has 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Her dad died when Meytal was 7 years old, when a drunk driver crashed while he was standing on the sidewalk. Her mom successfully raised them all by herself.
Meytal started playing drums at 18 years old, despite the conventional ‘you’re making noise, you’re wasting time, you’re spending money, and this will never mount to anything’ sorta attitude she was getting at home. That same year, she graduated from high school and was drafted to the Israeli Defense Force (it’s mandatory), She served her country for 2 years and was released from the IDF.
At the age 21 Meytal Kohen moved to Los Angeles to attended the LA Music Academy, and while in school she managed to break her back in a car accident. She broke three vertebras, and had to wear a back brace for 6 months.
In 2009, a few friends and Meytal recorded a metal violin cover of System Of A Down’s Toxicity.
They shot a music video for it and put it up on YouTube.
A few months later, that video had 3 MILLION views.
After seeing the response to our toxicity video, Kohen decided she was going to shoot 100 drum covers and see what happens next.
5 years later, she has over 120 videos, 120,000,000 views, 800,000 subscribers on YouTube, and 1,000,000 likes on Facebook.
Her first original album is fully funded through a kickstarter campaign.
3,173 backers pledged $144,341 to help her bring this project to life.(https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/meytal/breaking-youtube-meytal-cohens-first-original-albu)
