The duo NEW COMPOSERS (Igor Veritchev & Valera Alakhov) were among the first musicians from Russia to consciously turn away from traditional instruments and sound production. In the atrestudio St Petersburg, using elements of concrete music, artificial sounds, fragments of different recordings – from classical music to rock – and all kinds of sound synthesizers the New Composers create bold music collages and enigmatic compositions, in many ways, anticipating the emergence of different styles such as trance, electro ambient etc. In the 80s the New Composers record several albums using different sound sources, from previously recorded to synthesized ones: “Pertentsiya verbalizatsii” (1985), “Arctic-Antarctic” (1986), “The wind of change” (1987), “Contacts of the Third Kind” (1988) etc.
In 1985 the New Composers record in collaboration with Sergey Kurekhin the experimental vinyl “Insect Culture” (released in 1987) in the project "Popular Mechanics" by Arkrecords U. K. which was widely acclaimed among the Western avant-garde musicians including Frank Zappa.
In 1987, in the wake of the private entrepreneurship in Russia, the New Composers registere the artistic association “The Science Fiction Club”, based at the Planetarium in St Petersburg. They organize multimedia performance, science&music program for children and their own music nights, followed by techno parties, which pave the ground for the emergence of Russian techno culture.
In 1990 they arrived in England where they recorded the single “Spoutnik” which the I.D. Magazine ranked 2nd.
Their music combines easy listening, ambient, techno and drum'n'bass par excellence.
