The project "Pyatnitsa Drob' Subbota" (Friday Slash Saturday) started in Kharkov in 1994.
This is a fantastic cocktail of black humour, political grotesque, pointed social satire and quasifolk art.
This project was originally planned as a studio project and the initial aim was to produce radio shows and studio albums. But within a year this show became a "cult" one for thousands of Kharkovites. In 1995 the show won a prize as the best radio show at the "Reclama Mama" contest. Every participant to the PDS project can be called a veteran of the independent Ukrainian radio broadcasting as alongside with PDS each of them also authored numerous radio projects ranging from entertainig radio shows to serious publicistic programmes. Since 1995 PDS have been actively appearing on-stage with very successful gigs. The professional level of the participants to the project is confirmed by the fact that two out of four PDS-ers are professional musicians with a more than 10 years experience. PDS have been performing in clubs and on big open stages, for example in 1999 festival 'Osteuropa im Wandel der Revolutionen & konterrevolutionen' in Weimar (potential TV audience of about 2 million people), 1999 all Former-Soviet Union (CIS) students humor festival (in Russian called KVN) in Sochi (Russia), 1997 at the Radio-50 (Kharkov) party (live audience of more than 10 000 people) . Currently PDS project can boast more than 80 radio shows, tens of successful gigs and two albums.
Short profile on music concepts of the PDS
The musical concept of the PDS have always been the multystylistics and fusion which means a grotesque combination of associatively very different musical material. The artistic aim has always been to fuse together uncombinable things, to bring into one melting pot different cultures, ethnical musical traditions and styles. In the instrumental part of the PDS music Latin American and African ethnocultures prevail. The lyrics and vocal style are rather Slavonic, or to be precise quasi-ethnical Ukrainian. Well known melodies, especially Soviet or Russian pop music combined with the classic Western hits are used as background or as means of creating a mood humouristic or even satiric attitude . It all started with playing well known soviet pop on live instruments with parodied lyrics. Then mixing of the ready made records and laying the vocal parts on was tried.
